No tougher measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic will be introduced in England during the festive period, despite the country currently suffering hundreds of thousands of omicron variant cases a day, said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday.
However, he stressed that the government would continue to monitor the situation closely and would “not hesitate to act” after Christmas if needed.
“We don’t think today that there is enough evidence to justify any tougher measures before Christmas,” Johnson said in a video posted on social media.
“We continue to monitor Omicron very closely and if the situation deteriorates we will be ready to take action if needed.”, he added.
The UK has recorded more than 90,000 new daily COVID cases and 172 deaths yesterday, which is more than three times higher than the number of deaths recorded a day earlier.
According to the most recent report, a total of 51,537,827 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been delivered in the UK, with 47,102,814 second doses administered.
