For years, writers create fictional events of intelligence machines taking over the world, while humans have to hide or be captured to be slaves. Now, a chapter in those fictions are coming true as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used to write film and television scripts, sending Hollywood writers to take pickets on to the street in fear of losing their jobs and to protest unfair pay.
Popular artificial intelligence chatbot such as OpenAI’s ChatGDP comes under scrutiny for allegedly using data on the internet from artists, media companies and others to train its chatbot without permission.
People also fear that OpenAI will use their data to train the bot in which the company said that it will no longer use any data submitted through its ChatGPT and API for “service improvements,” including AI model training.
The AI is now so smart that it can write poems, solve mathematical problems and even pass hard examinations from law and business school.
This leads to Hollywood writers protesting in the U.S. to seek restrictions for the use of artificial intelligence in writing film and television scripts. This is among other issues that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) seeks to get a resolution, including improving compensation.
John August, a member of the WGA negotiating committee, said that writers do not want hard crafted material to be used feeding AI. He also pointed out that they, as writers, do not want to fix the first draft written by AI.
Some studios are now using AI to write the first draft and send it to writers to do the second draft, which pays less. Writers are afraid that they will be sidelined with the coming of AI.
Many writers stop their work to protest, and this will quickly have a huge impact on daily broadcasts such as the Late Night Show, which requires writers to generate scripts that are most relevant to the ongoing situation in the world or mostly in the U.S.
Jimmy Fallon, host of the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, said that he supports his writing staff.
“I wouldn’t have a show if it wasn’t for my writers, I support them all the way,” he said.
The situation concerning the fast-growing artificial intelligence prompted President Joe Biden to take action by calling the chief executives of Alphabet Inc’s Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and top administration officials to discuss key issues on Thursday.
In April, Biden said that tech companies had a responsibility to ensure their products were safe, citing that social media had already illustrated the harm that powerful technologies can do without the right safeguards.
