Despite many conflicts on the African continent on which many outlets failed to shed light: the recent attack in Burkina Faso; the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan; or multiple coup attempts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for example. Nowadays, cooperation between China and Africa is shaping up in the hope of more regional stability as their relations continue to improve. Regardless of some negative outlooks by their contestants, it is undeniable that a strategic correspondence between the mentioned two is taking place as multipolarity comes to light.
As of 2024, Liu Jianchao, Minister for International Department Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) led a tour of South Africa to emphasize the role of BRICS alliance while offering staunch support to Cyril Ramaphosa, president of the Government of National Unity. Zhou Pingjian, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya also joined African diplomats on a tour of Belt and Road Initiative sites in Kenya.
In celebration for a 60-year relation between China and Tanzania, Peace-Unity 2024 joint military exercises have been hosted to accommodate Chinese and Mozambican forces to conduct various drills.The People’s Liberation Army Navy also docked hospital ships in Madagascar, Mozambique and the Seychelles, for instance, to provide medical care for locals.
Experts predicted future Chinese investments in the continent’s energy sector. According to the Global Development Policy Center of Boston University, several Chinese companies have announced new projects focusing on African growing needs for energy. Sinotswana Green Energy, a Chinese consortium, agreed to finance the construction of a solar plant in Botswana, while Sokec and Nilepet, a Chinese firm and South Sudanese state enterprise signed an MOU to construct an oil facility.
Nevertheless, the aforesaid did not go off without a hitch. Some Ugandan residents continued to protest the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline supported by Chinese and French oil conglomerates – some protestors have been detained outside the Chinese embassy in Kampala. Nigerian jets have also been confiscated in France by a Chinese company Zhongshan due to persisting disputes as Nigeria accused the company of “undercutting” the nation.
