Kim Jong Un Push for Suicide Bombing Drones Mass Production, After He Claims Provocation From South Korea
Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, has ordered for the mass production of suicide bombing drones after the hermit kingdom claimed that South Korea is flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Pyongyang airspace, and accusing them of provoking a conflict.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday, the supreme leader oversaw the performance test of various attack drones for the second time in less than three months.
KCNA released images showing the drone at a nosedive position above the car before setting it on fire in the next image.
While the performance of North Korea’s drones remains questionable, Kim has put the development of drones for air and naval warfare into a top priority.
In 2022, North Korea sent five drones across the demilitarized zone, one of them flew close to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office in Seoul. The country’s armed forces have tried to shoot the UAVs down but failed due to concern over the use of live ammunition in such heavily populated areas.
In the aftermath of the incursion, the South Korean government hatched a plan to invest KRW 560 billion ($400 million) into UAV development for the next five years, including an anti-drone system to defend against another attack. Yoon’s government stated that the country is looking to develop laser weapons to shoot down any North Korean drone attacking its airspace.
The drone race between two Korea came back into the spotlight after North Korea claimed that South Korea had been infiltrating its capital airspace with UAVs, and called it war provocation. Seoul has not yet confirmed any responsibility for the intrusion.
