South Korea’s Opposition Party Plans to Impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo

South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party (DP) initially planned to submit a bill to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo on Tuesday, but decided to postpone its plan to until later in the week, citing rising political uncertainty following the introduction of the impeachment bill on Tuesday, according to DP leader Park Chan-dae.

The controversy began after former President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a short-lived martial law on December 3, which led to his impeachment on December 14. Han stepped in as acting president but is now facing criticism from the DP.

The DP claims that Han has supported Yoon by delaying the vote for a special counsel, obstructing efforts to investigate Yoon’s martial law decision. Park stated that Han was attempting to stall and act against the public’s wishes.

Under South Korean law, if Han is impeached, the finance minister would be next in line to assume the role of acting president.

As for Yoon, since his impeachment, he has remained out of the public eye, and there have been no updates regarding his legal team. A lawyer advising him has stated that Yoon may not appear this Wednesday, despite being summoned by authorities for questioning.
