Trump Sees Path to ‘Very Good’ Deal with China to End Tit-for-Tat Tariff War

U.S. President Donald Trump, on Thursday, voiced optimism regarding a potential favorable trade agreement with China for a “very good” deal, despite the recent implementation of steep tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports by the United States in response to retaliatory measures from Beijing.

Trump, as cited by The Hill, affirmed, “We’re going to make a deal. I think we’re going to make a very good deal with China.” He also conveyed confidence in establishing agreements with Europe and other parties without encountering significant obstacles.

Reflecting on the escalating tariff exchanges between the U.S. and China that unsettled markets, Trump hinted at the possibility of halting the back-and-forth tariff increases and mentioned a delay in finalizing a deal concerning the future of social media platform TikTok.

Expressing his reluctance to raise tariffs excessively as it could deter consumers, Trump highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance to encourage purchasing behavior. Furthermore, he hinted at the potential for reducing tariff levels to stimulate buying activity.

“I don’t want them to go higher because at a certain point you make it where people don’t buy,” Trump said when asked about tariffs on Chinese goods.

Since last week, China stated that it will not play the tariff game with the U.S. after Washington slapped 145% on Chinese goods. However, several other measures were continuously proposed by Beijing to hinder U.S. economic growth.

Trump disclosed ongoing communications with China post-tariff implementation and remained hopeful about the prospects of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
