Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister have addressed the electricity rates for the period of September – December 2024, amidst speculations of an impending hike.
The deputy stated that the government’s policy in this matter is to keep the electricity rate steady at 4.18 baht per unit to alleviate burdens on the public.
When queried about the outstanding debts owed to the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) for electricity provision, it was asked whether these debts would need to be repaid. The Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister mentioned that discussions were ongoing, indicating that they are exploring methods similar to those employed in previous instances.
As the Ministry of Energy is actively discussing strategies to reduce electricity rates during September–December 2024, Salirathavibhaga will engage in discussions with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Friday to deliberate on proposed measures, with plans to formally present the topic to the cabinet during their meeting next Tuesday.
