Hong Kong Sees Population Growth for Third Consecutive Years

Hong Kong’s population has grown slightly by 0.1% in 2024 to approximately 7.53 million as the number of newborns in Hong Kong and expats in the city has been rising. Furthermore, this expansion also marks the third consecutive year of growing population.

This expansion came while the city attempted to boost its economy and recover its international appeal after the stringent COVID rules, which ended in 2023, significantly affected the city’s revenue, while mass protests against the government in 2019 and China’s national security law in 2020 damaged its reputation.

Hong Kong’s government stated that the main attribution to this growth is the net increase of 21,000 people and the rise of newborns by 11% to 36,700. Moreover, there are various measures the financial hub used to attract talented people from around the world throughout 2024.

Meanwhile, China, the second largest economy in the world, is now suffering a population decline for a third consecutive year in 2024.
