Singapore Elevates Ties with Vietnam to Broaden Collaboration on Emerging Areas

Singapore has officially elevated its bilateral relations with Vietnam to the highest level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), a first for the city-state with an ASEAN member.

This landmark announcement came during a joint press conference featuring Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam, who commenced a three-day official visit to Singapore on Tuesday.

The CSP aims to broaden collaboration into future-focused areas, such as digital economy expansion, renewable energy, and carbon credits.

The partnership will ignite innovation and foster green growth in both Singapore and Vietnam, stated Wong. The agreement is expected to lay the groundwork for initiatives such as the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement and the ASEAN Power Grid, which are designed to enhance regional resilience.

General Secretary Lam added that the CSP will further strengthen political trust and bolster economic cooperation between the two nations. This enhancement of bilateral ties builds on the strategic partnership established in 2013, which focused on trade, investment, security and defence, aviation, and education.

In conjunction with the CSP, eight memoranda of understanding and agreements were exchanged, covering domains like transnational crime prevention, digital transformation, offshore wind power trade, fintech innovation, and capital markets regulation.
