The European Union is gearing up to implement additional retaliatory measures against U.S. tariffs should ongoing negotiations reach an impasse, stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
This development follows the U.S. administration’s decision to levy a 20% tariff on EU products, an escalation that has stirred transatlantic trade tensions.
Following President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs, the EU had previously announced retaliatory duties in response to safeguard its workers and consumers. With plans to introduce counter-tariffs amounting to EUR 26 billion ($28 billion) on American goods, the EU is prepared to act firmly if diplomatic efforts falter.
The EU has indicated readiness to reinstate suspended tariffs from Trump’s initial term, coupled with imposing additional duties on a wide array of U.S. products.
These include industrial-grade metals like steel and aluminum, together with their derivative products such as machinery parts. Broader categories comprising bourbon, various agricultural goods, leather items, and home appliances are also earmarked for tariffs.
Following an initial deferral, these tariffs are slated for implementation by mid-April.
