China reaffirmed its commitment to “resolute and forceful” measures to safeguard national interests after the U.S. imposed substantial tariffs of 104% on Chinese goods.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted that productive dialogue and negotiation requires equality and mutual respect from the U.S.
As reiterated at a regular briefing, Lin echoed earlier comments from the commerce ministry, asserting China’s determination to persistently counter U.S. tariff actions.
Following last week’s announcement by China’s Finance Ministry of 34% tariffs on U.S. imports starting April 10, China’s retaliatory move added to the growing tensions, which initially targeted key agricultural and energy imports.
Analyst Dan Wang from Eurasia Group noted that the heightened U.S. tariffs, surpassing a 35% threshold, could eradicate profit margins for Chinese exporters, potentially ceasing their U.S. market presence.
In a related white paper issued by the State Council Information Office, China denounced U.S. tariff strategies as protectionist and pressed for collaborative efforts to mitigate escalating economic frictions.
While urging the U.S. to eliminate trade barriers and foster dialogue, Beijing maintained that U.S. tariffs ultimately harm American economic interests, intensifying market volatility and inflation pressures. Although China aims to uphold open channels for negotiation, it remains steadfast in combating U.S. economic measures perceived as coercive.
