Pichai Chunhavajira, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Thailand, announced after today’s Cabinet meeting that the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mr. Somchai Sujjapongse, a former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, as the new Chairman of the Bank of Thailand.
He will replace Mr. Pramethi Wimonsiri, whose acting term concluded on January 16, 2025. The appointment will take effect immediately upon receiving royal endorsement.
Somchai Sujjapongse brings a wealth of experience and expertise in finance and economics to the position. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Chulalongkorn University and later obtained his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Ohio State University, USA.
Between 2015 and 2018, Somchai served as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, where he played a key role in formulating fiscal policies and overseeing the country’s economy. Prior to this, from 2014 to 2015, he served as the Director-General of the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance.
