Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on Wednesday reported, Tencent must get approval from Chinese regulators to send updates for its apps.
State media reported, Tencent violated data protection rules on several occasions this year.
App approvals of Tencent is currently suspended and China’s Ministry of Industry and Information technology must review any new application and updates before launch. CCTV also noted it could take as much as seven days for the reviewal process.
In a statement to CNBC Tencent spokesperson said, “We are continuously working to enhance user protection features within our apps, and also have regular cooperation with relevant government agencies to ensure regulatory compliance. Our apps remain functional and available for download,”.
