Several reports have raised consumer’s concerns on the tinned tuna in Europe that is said to contain mercury levels above other products. As a major producer and distributor in Europe under several brands, Thai Union has disclosed a statement to address this concern and reaffirm that their products are safe for consumers.
Statement from Thai Union Group:
Thai Union tuna products are safe for consumers. The safety and well-being of our consumers are our top priorities.
We rigorously ensure that all our products meet current European regulations. Following studies completed by scientific risk assessment bodies such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), regulatory authorities set strict limits to protect consumer health, which we follow with the utmost rigor, and care.
In the case of tuna, European regulations mandate a maximum mercury threshold of 1mg/kg in raw materials.
Accordingly, we conduct stringent tests on the tuna we source to ensure compliance and guarantee the safety of our products. These tests are conducted in collaboration with independent and accredited laboratories.
In the past three years, we have carried out hundreds of checks. The results of these checks have never revealed mercury levels higher than the European standards in place, averaging between 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg – 70 to 80% below the permitted limit.
We reaffirm our commitment to stringent compliance with public health standards. We have confidence in the regulatory authorities and scientific bodies to set optimal, harmonized safety standards for everyone.
