On Monday, two Japanese carmakers Honda and Nissan were anticipated to announce the beginning of business integration talk, as the two companies seek cooperation to weather a change in the industry, said two sources familiar with the matter.
The two companies will hold a board meeting on Monday to discuss the talk and later hold a joint press conference, with Nissan’s partner Mitsubishi Motors also expected to participate, said the sources.
The group from a merger of Japan’s three giant car producers would be the world’s third-largest auto group after Toyota and Volkswagen. The merging would also be the biggest industry-shaping event since the formation of Stellantis in 2021.
Honda and Nissan have been discussing business cooperation for months, as the two carmakers have to contend with growing Tesla and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
The integration that has been discussed would include Honda supplying hybrid vehicles to Nissan and the two would jointly use Nissan’s assembly plant in Britain, according to a Kyodo news report on Saturday.
The talks are expected to finalize in June 2025, according to the NHK report.
