UK Sanctions Chelsea FC Owner for Ties with Putin despite His Help in Peace Talks

Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government, citing his long relationship with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The sanction also includes six more of Kremlin’s wealthiest and most influential oligarchs as the UK government tries to pressure Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

“I have announced a full asset freeze and travel ban on seven more of Russia’s wealthiest and most influential oligarchs, including Roman Abramovich and Oleg Deripaska. We will not stop in this mission to ramp up pressure on the Putin regime,” wrote Liz Truss, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs in her tweet.

All personnel that got banned by the UK government will face asset freeze and travel restriction.

“Abramovich has been trying to mobilize support for a peaceful resolution ever since. Although Abramovich’s influence is limited, he is the only one who responded and taken it upon himself to try,” said Ukrainian film producer Alexander Rodnyansky who reportedly asked the Chelsea owner to help in enabling the talks, and traveled to Belarus to participate in the discussions.

Abramovich reportedly landed in Belarus to help with the first talks between Russia and Ukraine.
