While China faces an increasing number of export bans on advanced technology, largely imposed by the United States, President Xi Jinping reportedly told officials that issues in key technological fields must be solved from the bottom up.
According to Xinhua, President Xi Jinping told the 24-member Politburo on Tuesday that China must increase its investment in basic research in science and technology if it is to become an independent technological superpower.
This comes as China’s efforts to catch up to the United States and its partners in cutting-edge semiconductor technology have run into increasing resistance in recent years.
Japan and the Netherlands reportedly agreed in January to impose export restrictions on semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, in accordance with the US government’s announcement in October 2022.
