Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has mandated an attack on Israel in response to the assassination of Hamas’s leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran.
The order was given at an emergency meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on Wednesday morning, following Iran’s declaration of Mr. Haniyeh’s death, as per three Iranian officials familiar with the directive.
Iran and Hamas have alleged that Israel orchestrated the assassination, although Israel, engaged in conflict with Hamas in Gaza, has refrained from confirming or refuting any involvement in Mr. Haniyeh’s death.
Meanwhile, Israel’s track record includes the targeted killings of adversaries abroad, such as Iranian nuclear scientists and military leaders.
Throughout nearly ten months of conflict in Gaza, Iran has adopted a strategy of pressuring Israel via increased attacks by allied groups, while avoiding an all-out war.
After a significant assault on Israel in April, Iran is now deliberating its next move. Potential plans include drone and missile strikes on military installations near Tel Aviv and Haifa, with a focus on military rather than civilian targets, said the Iranian officials.
Supreme Leader Khamenei has instructed military leaders to prepare for both offensive and defensive actions in the event of a broader conflict.
In a public statement, he emphasized Iran’s intention to avenge Haniyeh’s death and warned of severe repercussions for Israel. Iranian officials have publicly stated their right to retaliate and defend against any encroachment on their sovereignty.
On the other hand, there is also internal disquiet in Iran over the failure to prevent Haniyeh’s assassination, with many calling for increased security measures to protect high-ranking officials.
