China Congratulates Trump for Election Victory, Setting the Stage for New US-Sino Trade Relationship

China congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. election during his phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China Foreign Ministry spokesperson remarks on Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the Wednesday election, emphasizing that China respects the choice of the American People.

On Wednesday, Trump and Xi held a phone call. According to a CNN report, the Chinese president also congratulated the president-elect as well.

Typically, Beijing sent congratulatory messages to whoever won the U.S. election expeditiously, except in the 2020 election when Joe Biden claimed victory. China was one of the few countries that remained silent for days during that election as Trump contested the results.

During his previous presidency, Trump started a trade war with China in 2018 and has sworn to impose a 60% tariff on all Chinese exports when he returns for his second term. The move could damage Chinese trade and throw a wrench into China’s economy.
