Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is working on arranging a visit to the United States later this month, after the G20 summit in Brazil on November 18-19, to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Ishiba commented that he had a brief talk with Trump via phone on Thursday morning and expressed optimism about their future discussions, while also emphasizing the importance of reinforcing the Japan-U.S. alliance.
Japanese officials have been intensifying efforts to reconnect with Trump’s circle before the 2024 election, fearing potential protectionist trade measures that could affect Japan.
The late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first foreign leader to engage with Trump post his 2016 election win, forming a close bond that eased tensions between both countries.
