China has warned that no one will emerge victorious from a trade war after Donald Trump threatened to impose a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports.
As the world braces for Donald Trump’s return to the White House, he has announced plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods until China addresses the flow of illegal drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, into the United States.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu addressed the issue of U.S. tariffs on China, emphasizing that economic cooperation between the two nations is mutually beneficial. He further warned, “No one will win a trade war or a tariff war,” in response to the escalating tensions over tariffs.
Liu reaffirmed to Trump and the public that China has been actively working to fulfill the agreement made by Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden to combat drug trafficking. He then countered claims that China is allowing fentanyl precursors to enter the U.S., calling such accusations completely flawed.
This statement aligns with the small visible progress both nations have made in shutting down the illicit traffic of chemicals used to produce deadly fentanyl following the agreement between Biden and Xi in 2023. The US President urged China to take stronger action by enforcing tougher laws to control these chemicals.
In June, Chinese law enforcement officials were assigned increased attention to combat drug trafficking, while both nations unveiled a joint drug investigation task force. Two months later, China hosted a joint counternarcotics working group and announced its intention to control three key chemicals essential for fentanyl production.
