Russia has continued its assault on Ukraine’s energy facilities, launching 11 waves of missile strikes at power generators so far in 2024. These attacks have caused widespread blackouts, leaving millions of civilians without electricity. The most recent strikes have targeted power substations and gas infrastructure.
Energy officials have warned of extended emergency power cuts, although it remains unclear whether this is directly linked to the attacks or a precautionary measure. However, CEO of Yasno, Ukraine’s leading supplier of electricity and energy-efficient solutions, confirmed that by Friday morning, 3.5 million people were without electricity.
Additionally, Lviv in the western part of Ukraine also confirmed that energy facilities were hit, forcing changes to the power cut schedule. While Russia claims its strikes are aimed solely at Ukraine’s power system and not civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, on the eastern front, Russian forces are intensifying their efforts to capture the entire industrial Donbas region.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha argues that these actions are part of a broader strategy to deprive the country of energy. He called for the urgent delivery of advanced air defense systems, including NASAMS, HAWK, or IRIS-T, to strip Putin of his means of terror.
