On Friday, the acting president of South Korea, Han Duck-soo was impeached by the National Assembly. This marks the second time in a span of one month that South Korea removed its head of state since the short-lived martial law on 3 December.
President Yoon Suk Yeol, Han’s predecessor, was impeached on 14 December after declaring martial law for the first time since the military coup of 1979. Yoon justified the decree by saying that it was to protect the constitutional order and crack down on pro-North Korean anti-government groups.
On Thursday, Han’s opposition brought a motion against the acting president for his unwillingness to immediately appoint three justices in the Constitutional Court, which is preparing to discuss Yoon’s fate as the president of South Korea.
South Korea’s politics has once again been thrown into turmoil with Han’s impeachment. Driven Korea won down 0.40% against the dollars after the news.
