SKY’s CEO announced the installation of a biometric system across six Thai airports, set to launch tomorrow.
Mr. Sitthidech Mayalarp, CEO of SKY ICT Company Limited (SET: SKY), announced at the 2024 Annual Conference on Disease Control and Public Health Safety that SKY will install an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) in six major Thai airports: Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang Airport, Chiang Mai Airport, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai Airport, Phuket Airport, and Hat Yai Airport. The system will be operational for domestic passengers starting November 1, 2024, and will be available for international passengers on December 1, 2024.
Mr. Sitthidech explained that the biometric system will streamline processes for travelers and airport personnel by reducing procedural steps and enhancing efficiency. Passengers can use facial recognition for identification, minimizing the need for physical document checks and reducing contact within the airport.
Additionally, Mr. Sitthidech emphasized the importance of the system, as Thailand remains a popular destination for travelers. Last year, more than 100 million inbound and outbound tourists passed through these airports, and this year, the number is expected to increase by another 20 percent.
As for the process, the system begins by scanning passengers’ IDs or passports at the counter (CUTE: Common Use Terminal Equipment) or the self-check-in ticketing system (CUSS: Common Use Self-check-in System). It then creates a unique Travel Token for each passenger, enabling them to scan their faces throughout the airport journey, from check-in to boarding, without additional document checks.
Besides these two systems, there is also CUBD (Common Use Bag Drop) for automatic baggage loading, PVS (Passenger Validation System) for passenger screening, and SBG (Self-Boarding Gate) for automated boarding. All of these are part of SKY’s pre-boarding passenger service system or CUPPS (Common Use Passenger Processing System).
SKY is confident that its biometric system will facilitate a “touchless society” for travelers, offering greater convenience and safety. This development aligns with SKY’s goal of supporting Thailand’s shift from the “New Normal” to the “Now Normal,” ensuring travelers experience a safe, secure, and convenient journey.
