On Wednesday, Apple made recent strides to upgrade its software services for iPhone, iPad and Mac by integrating the sophisticated language model, ChatGPT developed by OpenAI, into its intelligent personal assistant, Siri.
The move comes as an effort to streamline and handle more complex queries from Apple users. When Siri receives a query that is deemed more suited to ChatGPT’s capabilities, the user is asked to grant access to OpenAI’s service.
In addition, Apple also added a layer of privacy protection to this feature, ensuring that OpenAI will not retain the user’s requests. The integration leverages the capacity of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model with users not needing an OpenAI account to utilize it.
The current iOS 18.2 release positions Apple to ramp up its marketing campaign for the iPhone 16 lineup backed by Apple Intelligence, their set of AI-driven features, with more upgrades of Apple Intelligence set to be released next year, bringing significant advancements to Siri’s abilities, including in-app actions.
The integration of ChatGPT is considered a significant win for both Apple and OpenAI. On one hand, as Apple Intelligence expands with more features, it is expected to stimulate iPhone sales, igniting an upgrade cycle and placing Apple at the forefront of consumer-centric AI.
On the other hand, OpenAI sees a golden opportunity to expose its key product to millions of iPhone users on a global scale.
Meanwhile, the use of Apple Intelligence would require users to possess an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 model. The update bundle includes new additions such as the image-generating app, Playground, and Image Wand, an editing tool used to delete objects or imperfections from images.
