Samsung Electronics is set to expand its on-device AI operations this year, with ambitions to surpass the global market growth in the consumer electronics sector.
Jong-Hee Han, CEO of the South Korean tech giant, projected that, in 2025, the global market for smartphones, televisions, and home appliances will grow around 3%, while Samsung’s mobile devices segment is expected to advance by 4%-5%. The company’s TV and home appliance divisions are also anticipated to see accelerated growth.
Samsung is integrating artificial intelligence across its product lines, embedding AI chips into appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and robot vacuum cleaners. The company’s flagship smartphones, such as the Galaxy S24 series, boast AI features like real-time translation for phone calls in foreign languages.
This aggressive AI push comes as Samsung faces stiff competition from Chinese brands like Huawei and Xiaomi, which are offering high-end smartphones at lower prices.
Han acknowledged the competition as beneficial for both Samsung and consumers, emphasizing that the company intends to focus on enhanced security and user convenience over price reductions.
Samsung is set to release its fourth-quarter revenue and operating profit forecasts on Wednesday, ahead of the full quarterly results later in January. Analysts polled by Reuters anticipate the company’s operating profit of 8.2 trillion won ($5.6 billion) for the December quarter, showing a significant increase from the previous year’s 2.8 trillion won.
