Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, announced a significant $3 billion investment to expand the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) and Azure cloud-computing services in India, which is a crucial growth market for US tech companies.
With its population of over 1.4 billion and low-cost internet access, India has become an attractive destination for technology companies, drawing executives like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun from Meta.
Nadella highlighted that this $3 billion investment would be Microsoft’s largest expansion in India. As part of this effort, Microsoft will train 10 million people in AI skills by 2030, building on last year’s commitment to training 2 million individuals in smaller cities and rural areas by 2025.
Additionally, Nadella met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss technology, AI, and Microsoft’s ongoing investments in the country.
Beyond India, Microsoft is also making substantial investments globally to build out its AI infrastructure and data-center network. Just last week, the company revealed an $80 billion investment plan for fiscal 2025.
Although half of it will be spent in the US, this investment will be allocated to build data centers to support the training of AI models and the deployment of AI and cloud-based applications.
