Trump’s New Executive Order to Position US as Global Leader in AI

As Donald Trump entered the fourth day of his second term as President of the United States, he signed another executive order. This one aimed at advancing innovation and eliminating barriers to solidify the nation’s position as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the order, the US must develop AI systems without any “ideological bias or engineered social agendas” to maintain the nation’s leadership in AI while boosting economic competitiveness, national security, and human well-being.

Key officials have 180 days to draft an action plan to develop AI systems aligned with these goals. Additionally, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) also has 60 days to update related directives to align the department with the new AI-focused strategy.

In addition, the new order has now revoked the previous executive order on “safe, secure, and trustworthy” AI, signed by former President Joe Biden. It now focuses on identifying rules that dampen innovation and instructs agencies to suspend, revise, or rescind such policies as needed.

Trump has been committed to enhancing the US’s capabilities in AI and ensuring the nation maintains its dominance in the field. On Tuesday, he unveiled a $500 billion project named Stargate to develop new AI infrastructure in the US, including constructing AI data centers and electricity generation facilities in Texas over the next four years.

Several tech leaders are set to participate in the project as investors, including OpenAI, Oracle Corporation, SoftBank Group Corp., Microsoft Corporation, NVIDIA Corporation, and others.
